Summer Teacher Residency at Cleveland Institute of Art

Applications Open from November 1 - March 1, 2019

Each year the Cleveland Institute of Art seeks to bring together a diverse group of art educators who have demonstrated a commitment to making, both in their personal studio and classroom. We create a stimulating and rigorous environment for a period of concentrated artistic creation, interaction and growth. Located in University Circle, Cleveland’s cultural center, the campus serves as a critical component of the program. This residency draws its vitality from the community created through the talent and energy of the participants, and the distinguished faculty who provide support and critical assistance. While on campus, residents are given individual studio spaces, art-making supplies relative to their proposal, and access to the school’s state-of-the-art facilities. Exclusive supplemental programming will allow for engagement with a broad array of educational and cultural resources.

Resident artist-educators will develop new, personal bodies of work with the support of an instructor in the studio. Residents will work independently, meet with mentor(s) for conceptual and material development, and participate in group critiques to enrich the practice of fellow residents. Residents will partake in professional development together with partner institutions to enhance art room curriculum. An exhibition will be installed and a public opening held at CIA to celebrate the works created during the Summer Teacher Residency. Residents will reside in CIA’s Uptown Residence Hall throughout the program.

The 2018 residency focus will be the exploration of 2D processes and materials, with residents having access to studios and facilities in the areas on painting, drawing, printmaking and digital photography.
